Lagos Generates $71.6M from ‘Detty December,’ Solidifies Status as Africa’s Tourism Hub

Lagos State has reaffirmed its position as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital, generating an impressive $71.6 million in revenue during the ‘Detty December 2024/2025’ season. This announcement was made by Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, during a review of the ‘Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report’ with stakeholders, including Tantacom Experimental Projects and MO Africa Consulting.

Aregbe highlighted the economic impact of the season, which saw $44 million generated from hotels and over $13 million from short-let apartments. The wide array of spectacular events, such as the Greater Lagos Fiesta, Rhythm Unplugged, Mrs. Universe Africa, and African Fashion Week, drew locals, diaspora Nigerians (popularly known as IJGBs), and international tourists, showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage and Lagos’ vibrant cultural landscape.

“Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State,” said Aregbe. “The ‘Ember’ season represents a period of unity, vibrancy, and celebration, fueled by the dynamic spirit of Lagosians and visitors alike.”

The events also strengthened ties with the Nigerian diaspora, promoted cultural tourism, and provided a platform to celebrate Nigerian arts, music, and cuisine on a global stage. Aregbe commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for their visionary leadership, which has laid the foundation for such achievements.
