Ex-Lagos Speaker Obasa Stays Abroad as Supporters Deny Corruption Claims

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, remains in the United States following his impeachment last Monday over allegations of fraud and misconduct. The decision has sparked significant backlash from loyal supporters in his Agege Constituency 1, who firmly reject the accusations.

Key community leaders and stakeholders convened on Friday at Obasa’s constituency office in Agege to address the allegations, which they describe as “politically motivated.”

“The claims against Obasa are nothing but baseless hearsay,” stated Mr. Omodele Morufu, Chairman of the Community Development Committee for Agege Local Government Area. “If Obasa decides to run for governor and it aligns with God’s will, it will be a source of pride for Agege. Those spreading these rumors are not God,” he added.

Morufu explained that the gathering was organized to inform residents of the true state of affairs and to counter what he called “false narratives.”

Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi, Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, reaffirmed support for Obasa, stating, “Obasa remains the leader of Agege politics. Regardless of how the Lagos Assembly treated him, he is a good man who has done much for this community.”

Echoing these sentiments, Oba Egbeyemi Lateef Oladimeji, the Alaige of Orile Agege Kingdom, remarked, “What happened to him is simply politics among politicians. Obasa has always supported me and the community.”

The impeachment has fueled speculation, with political analysts suggesting the move may be tied more to Obasa’s rumored ambition to run for the Lagos governorship in 2027 than to the fraud allegations.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda has made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following her election to succeed Obasa.
