Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have issued an apology to President Bola Tinubu for initiating the impeachment process against former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, SaharaReporters has learned.

The apology followed a directive from the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC)—the highest decision-making body of the Lagos APC—during an emergency meeting at the Lagos House, Marina, on Monday night. The meeting was attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and key APC leaders.

Tinubu’s Intervention and Lawmakers’ Apology Letters

A source disclosed that President Tinubu was displeased with Obasa’s removal and insisted on his reinstatement to prevent political instability. Some GAC members also criticized the leadership for not consulting them before Obasa’s impeachment, leading to internal division within the party.

As a result, lawmakers were directed to write two apology letters to President Tinubu.

  • The first letter acknowledged the impeachment as a “wrong move” and pledged to commute Obasa’s removal to resignation.
  • The second letter, signed by 17 out of 20 lawmakers from Lagos West, accepted Hon. Mojisola Meranda as Speaker and agreed to disregard the zoning formula.

Power Struggle and Internal Crisis in Lagos APC

Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation. His removal triggered internal conflicts, with some APC leaders, including Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, opposing the decision, while others, like Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, dismissed their concerns as irrelevant.

Reports indicate that President Tinubu has now ordered Obasa’s reinstatement, but this decision has sparked resistance. Some party members, including Governor Sanwo-Olu, are reportedly opposing the move behind closed doors.

Political Tensions Rise as Protests Emerge

Sources reveal that protests have erupted on Lagos Island, where Speaker Meranda hails from, as opposition to Obasa’s return intensifies. Meanwhile, another GAC meeting is expected soon to deliberate on Tinubu’s directive and the future of the Lagos Assembly leadership.
