The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to construct an 80-metre span bridge in front of the Dangote Refinery, as part of Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. This infrastructure development aims to facilitate uninterrupted truck movement, ensuring efficient logistics and reduced congestion around the refinery.

Enhancing Logistics & Infrastructure

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during a Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway stakeholder meeting in Lagos on Sunday. He explained that the bridge is designed to optimize truck traffic flow, preventing obstruction and enhancing accessibility for industries within the Lekki Free Zone.

“As we move into Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, we must ensure smooth traffic flow in front of the Dangote Refinery. To achieve this, an 80-metre span bridge will be constructed, allowing seamless truck movement without disruption,” Umahi stated.

The bridge design takes into account existing infrastructure and environmental factors, ensuring minimal disruption. Umahi highlighted that the project avoided routing through Navy land and navigated around a school, demonstrating the government’s commitment to responsible urban planning.

Progress on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road – Section 1

Providing an update on Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi revealed that construction began in March 2024 and covers 47.47 kilometres, ending at Eleko Junction, where Section 2 begins.

Key highlights include:
30 km of Section 1 is expected to be completed by May 2025 for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu.
Challenges faced: Over 10 km of the section was covered with topsoil from years of refuse dumping, requiring deep excavation and sand-filling to stabilize the ground.
Ground settlement tests have been successfully conducted, ensuring 100% stability and enabling construction to proceed.
The remaining 17.47 km has been fully sand-filled up to Eleko Junction, marking significant progress in the project.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a transformational infrastructure project, set to enhance connectivity, ease transportation bottlenecks, and support economic growth along Nigeria’s coastal corridor.
