Lagos Assembly Calls for Tougher Measures Against Open Defecation
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to fully enforce environmental laws against open defecation and ensure the widespread availability of free public toilets across the state.
The lawmakers emphasized the urgent need for a sustained public awareness campaign to educate residents on the health and environmental risks of open defecation. Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda condemned the practice, highlighting the critical need for improved sanitation infrastructure.
Raising the issue under Urgent Public Importance, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe (Oshodi-Isolo 1) warned that open defecation tarnishes Lagos‘ global reputation and hinders sustainable development. Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry 1) called for the arrest of homeless individuals contributing to the sanitation crisis, urging local government chairmen to support efforts in keeping the state clean. Meanwhile, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 1) proposed the introduction of affordable public toilets, and Hon. Femi Saheed (Kosofe 2) stressed the need for clear policies on managing public sanitation facilities.
Additionally, Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu 2) linked poor waste management to open defecation, urging stricter enforcement, particularly in market areas like Mile 12.
The Assembly resolved to intensify awareness campaigns and collaborate with private companies to fund sanitation initiatives, ensuring a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
