The Lagos State House of Assembly has officially reaffirmed the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, emphasizing that the process was conducted lawfully and in full compliance with constitutional provisions.

In a statement released on Thursday, Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode clarified that the decision adhered strictly to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act.

Following their appearance at the Department of State Services (DSS) Lagos Command in Shangisha, the lawmakers reiterated that due process was followed, referencing Sections 92 and 96, which outline the legal framework for electing and removing a Speaker.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” the lawmakers stated.

“Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”

The lawmakers also commended the DSS for its professionalism, ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement. They confirmed that all detained lawmakers had been released.

Reaffirming their commitment to legislative duties, the Assembly urged all stakeholders—including the executive branch, political leaders, and the general public—to uphold the sanctity of legislative processes and avoid undue interference.

Obasa was removed by 35 out of 40 Assembly members on January 13, 2025, following allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of funds. His former Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda, was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker.
