Lagos Assembly: Obasa Holds Reconciliation Talks with Meranda, Lawmakers
Newly re-elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is currently engaged in a closed-door reconciliation meeting with 39 lawmakers at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja. The meeting, which began at 2:10 PM, includes the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and aims to mend relationships, ease tensions, and set a new course for legislative harmony.
With this development, speculations about Obasa’s possible resignation may no longer hold weight. As of 3:45 PM, the crucial discussions were still ongoing.
Sources also indicate that Obasa is likely to withdraw his lawsuit against the House of Assembly and 33 lawmakers at the Ikeja High Court over his removal as Speaker.
On Monday, in a dramatic turn of events, Obasa was re-elected as Speaker after the resignation of his successor, Meranda. The decision came after intervention from the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, both at the state and national levels.
Obasa Reinstated as Lagos Speaker, Meranda Steps Back as Deputy
Obasa was initially removed on January 13, 2025, by 33 out of 39 lawmakers and replaced by his former deputy, Meranda. The fallout sparked internal conflicts within the Lagos Assembly, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC)—APC’s highest decision-making body in the state—party loyalists, and supporters.
In response, President Bola Tinubu stepped in, commissioning a high-powered reconciliation committee led by Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Segun Osoba, among others, to broker peace and restore stability in the Assembly.
