Lagos BRT Hikes Fares by 18%
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares under its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), citing rising operational costs and the need to sustain efficient public transportation in Lagos.
In a statement released on Thursday, LAMATA explained that the fare adjustment is essential to keep buses running and ensure uninterrupted mobility for Lagos commuters.
The new BRT fare structure will take effect from February 17, 2025. “The fare increase is due to the rising cost of operations and the need to maintain reliable bus services across Lagos. We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation,” the statement read.
This announcement follows a previous fare hike on June 30, 2022, when the Lagos State Government approved a ₦100 increase across all BRT routes due to escalating diesel prices and a shortage of spare parts affecting bus availability.
Meanwhile, Fola Tinubu, Managing Director of Primero Transport Services Limited, a key operator of the Lagos BRT scheme, recently stated in an interview with TheCable that the company plans to adopt the federal government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative by converting its fleet to CNG-powered buses. However, he clarified that this transition would not lead to a reduction in BRT fares, as the company remains focused on profitability.
