The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced its plans to demolish shanties and illegal market structures around the Cele Underbridge area on the Lagos-Apapa Oshodi Expressway.

During an inspection tour of drainage enforcement in the area, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, expressed concern over the environmental and safety risks posed by these structures. He described the illegal markets and shanties as a menace, citing reports of criminal activities and environmental hazards under and around the pedestrian bridge.

“We received several complaints last year about illegal activities taking place on the pedestrian bridge and under the bridge. Criminal operations, illegal trading, and the construction of numerous shanties were reported. This has worsened drainage blockages and caused severe environmental hazards,” Wahab stated.

He noted that the human activities in the area have significantly contributed to drainage blockages, leading to flooding and other environmental issues. The ministry has already served notices to traders and residents, urging them to vacate the area.

The commissioner also emphasized the role of the local government in building proper market facilities for the traders, expressing hope that necessary steps would be taken.

The demolition is expected to commence soon, with traders given a brief notice period to vacate the premises before the operation begins.
