The Lagos State Government is gearing up to launch the Omo-Eko App, a groundbreaking mobile application designed to deliver real-time traffic updates and transit insights to residents and visitors.

Currently 90% complete, the app was reviewed during a recent stakeholders’ meeting, where its pivotal role in Lagos’s journey toward achieving smart city status was emphasized.

In a statement shared via his official X account, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the Omo-Eko App as a one-stop platform for transportation-related activities, offering features like real-time navigation, live traffic updates, and essential information about the Ministry of Transportation and its agencies.

The app is set to simplify commuting across Lagos by providing timely updates on traffic conditions, transit schedules, and other vital developments.

“This cutting-edge application, now 90% complete, is designed to provide residents and visitors with a seamless solution for all transportation-related activities, while also offering essential updates about Lagos State,” the statement read in part.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to leverage technology for modernizing urban transportation and enhancing daily life for its citizens. The app’s imminent launch represents a significant step toward efficient, user-centric mobility in the bustling metropolis.

Key Stakeholder Collaboration

The stakeholders’ meeting brought together representatives from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), MTN, and other key partners, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this innovative project.

With the Omo-Eko App, Lagosians can look forward to a smarter, more connected approach to navigating the city’s traffic and transit systems.

What You Should Know

The Lagos State Government’s vision for modern urban transportation also includes integrating advanced technologies like CCTV cameras into its infrastructure.

According to the 2024 Lagos State Transport Policy, CCTV cameras will be installed at interchanges, bus stops, freight yards, and taxi parks over the next two years to enhance mobility and traffic management.

These cameras will complement the proposed modern Traffic Control Centre (TCC), enabling Automatic Incident Detection (AID) for faster response times and adaptive traffic management plans. The real-time data collected will ensure smoother traffic flow and minimize disruptions.

Additionally, the policy introduces the Lagos Transport Police (LTP), a new unit that will collaborate with the Nigerian Police to safeguard transport facilities, oversee the CCTV network, and manage local control centres at major interchanges. Advanced technologies like Variable Message Signs (VMS) will also be deployed to enhance emergency response capabilities.

Together, these measures aim to create a safer, more efficient transport network, enhancing the commuter experience and positioning Lagos as a model for urban transportation management.
