Lagos Govt Shuts Down Ebute-Ero Market Block Over Illegal Sewage Dumping
The Lagos State Government has sealed Ebute-Ero Market Block N for illegally channeling sewage pipes into public drains and constructing a septic tank on a pedestrian walkway.
Additionally, other facilities, including a public toilet under the bridge at Leventis Bus-Stop, Apongbon, were sealed for discharging untreated sewage into the Lagoon and the illegal construction of a public restroom.
The enforcement operation was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) on Friday, January 24, 2025. The announcement was made by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Wahab stressed that these actions demonstrate the state’s commitment to maintaining a sustainable environment, ensuring proper sanitation, and safeguarding public health in line with the Environmental Management and Protection Law (EMPL) 2017.
“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), in a demonstration of its commitment to environmental sustainability and public health safety, sealed a public toilet under the bridge at Leventis Bus-Stop, Apongbon, for discharging untreated sewage into the Lagoon and illegal construction. Similarly, Ebute-Ero Market Block N was sealed for illegally channeling sewage into public drains and building a septic tank on a walkway,” Wahab stated.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the Optimum Exposure Media Control Room was resealed for untreated sewage discharge into the Lagoon and other environmental violations.
Wahab reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards environmental pollution, urging citizens to adopt better hygiene practices to protect public health and contribute to environmental sustainability.
