Lagos govt teams up with Huawei to launch four Intelligent Transport Systems
The Lagos State Government has partnered with Huawei Technologies to launch four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites across key locations in the state. This initiative aims to significantly enhance traffic management and road safety in Lagos.
These new ITS sites will complement the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and other Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices already deployed across the state. The Lagos Ministry of Transportation, led by Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the partnership during a press briefing on Thursday.
Key Benefits of the New Intelligent Transport Systems
The newly deployed ITS sites include two primary categories: checkpoint sites for speed monitoring and e-police sites for monitoring traffic violations. These systems are designed to enforce traffic laws, manage vehicle speeds, and improve road safety across Lagos.
Strategically located across the city, the checkpoint sites are installed at Alapere (with a speed limit of 80 km/h) and Nitel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way (speed limit of 60 km/h). Additionally, the e-police sites at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road feature high-definition cameras to monitor traffic violations such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, and lane indiscipline.
Advancing Lagos’ Traffic Management System
The collaboration with Huawei Technologies marks a pivotal step in enhancing Lagos’ traffic management system, enabling the city to better monitor, control, and manage road traffic. The new systems are a key part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and address traffic congestion.
What You Should Know About Lagos’ Transport Modernization
In addition to the ITS initiative, the Lagos State Transport Policy (2024) outlines a 15-year plan to modernize the city’s transport network, with a strong focus on intelligent traffic solutions. The plan includes the establishment of a modern Traffic Control Centre (TCC) and Area Traffic Control (ATC) systems with dynamic cycle times to improve traffic flow.
The integration of CCTV for Automatic Incident Detection (AID) will help reduce response times and improve traffic management across Lagos. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will also provide real-time updates to motorists, helping them navigate around traffic issues and incidents.
