Lagos Imposes Penalties for Overspeeding
The Lagos State Government has announced the enforcement of a ₦50,000 fine for motorists exceeding speed limits on key routes, following the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) cameras to enhance traffic management and road safety.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that the ITS cameras are now operational at four strategic locations to monitor and enforce traffic laws.
According to Osiyemi, motorists driving above 80km/h along Alapere, Ogudu Road, or 60km/h on Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, will be penalized. The system will automatically detect violations, with offenders receiving real-time SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), detailing their infractions and applicable fines.

The ITS system includes:
- Checkpoint Sites for Speed Detection
- Alapere, Ogudu Road – Speed Limit: 80km/h
- Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way – Speed Limit: 60km/h
- E-Police Sites for Traffic Violations
- Allen Avenue Road Junction
- Nurudeen Olowopopo Road
These AI-powered cameras will detect a wide range of traffic violations, including speeding, running red lights, illegal U-turns, lane indiscipline, and reverse driving on highways. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents, improve compliance, and promote responsible driving.
Osiyemi emphasized that the system is not designed to be punitive but to enhance road safety, protect lives, and create a more efficient transportation network in Lagos.
