Lagos Set to Launch 10 New Ferries to Boost Water Transportation
Lagos State is set to strengthen its intermodal transportation system with the introduction of 10 new state-of-the-art ferries, aimed at enhancing public transit, reducing travel time, and driving socio-economic growth.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration announced the expansion as part of its ongoing commitment to integrating road, rail, and water transport for seamless connectivity across the state.
During a Joint Citizens/Media Engagement Forum in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, revealed that the new ferries, built by local engineers, meet global standards, showcasing Nigeria’s engineering capabilities.
“These ferries are not just a means of transportation but a testament to what is possible in Nigeria. Very soon, we will be commissioning about 10 of them. The new additions will expand the Lagos ferry fleet to 25, improving waterway connectivity and easing road congestion,” Omotoso stated.
This initiative aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES agenda, which prioritizes innovation, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. The ferry expansion is expected to provide Lagos residents with efficient, affordable, and eco-friendly transport options.
Key Infrastructure Developments in Lagos
In addition to the ferry expansion, Omotoso provided updates on other critical infrastructure projects, including the Solar Street Lighting Project and the Lagos Fibre-Optic Network Project.
- Solar Street Lighting Project: The installation of 32,000 solar-powered streetlights is 90% complete, undertaken in partnership with private firm LEDCo. This initiative aims to enhance public safety, cut energy costs, and lower Lagos’ carbon footprint.
- Lagos Fibre-Optic Network Project: Designed to improve internet connectivity and digital access across the state.
Boosting Lagos Tourism and Economic Growth
Omotoso also highlighted Lagos State’s efforts to promote tourism and entertainment, particularly through the annual “Detty December” festivities. These events have positioned Lagos as a top global destination for end-of-year celebrations, attracting visitors and boosting the local economy.
The commissioner further acknowledged the media’s role in governance transparency, stating that constructive feedback from journalists and citizens has been instrumental in shaping state policies and projects.
