A lecturer at the Lagos State University of Education (formerly Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education), Kolawole Muyiwa, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a student.

The Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, presided over by Justice Rahman Oshodi, delivered the verdict on Thursday, February 27, 2025. According to a statement by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, the judge ruled that the survivor’s testimony aligned with those of the prosecution witnesses, including a lawyer and the investigating police officer.

Muyiwa committed the crime on October 11, 2021, and was arraigned on October 6, 2023, pleading not guilty. However, during the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence from the victim, Caroline Ibe (Vice Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Badagry branch), and Investigating Police Officer Olufunke.

While noting that Muyiwa had no prior criminal record and was a married father of three, the judge emphasized that the gravity of his crime could not be ignored. “As a lecturer, you held a position of trust and authority, which you abused. The victim was a student under your guidance,” Justice Oshodi stated.

The prosecution confirmed that Muyiwa’s actions violated Section 260 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws (2015). Following his conviction, his name will be permanently added to the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
