Ahead of the upcoming local government elections in Lagos State, a group of chairmanship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ojokoro LCDA has warned against any attempt to subvert democratic processes during party primaries.

Speaking on behalf of 12 aspirants, Segun Sekoni and Mustapha Rasheed issued a joint statement on Monday, urging the APC leadership in Lagos to uphold internal democracy and allow for a transparent, free, and credible primary election.

They emphasized that true leadership cannot emerge through the imposition of candidates, calling on the party hierarchy to resist endorsing any individual without due process.

“Democracy flourishes when the selection process is credible, transparent, and inclusive. Any attempt to impose a candidate undermines these principles,” the statement read.

The aspirants firmly rejected claims circulating within party circles that a consensus had been reached in favor of a particular aspirant as Ojokoro’s sole chairmanship candidate.

“This so-called consensus is false and deceptive. There was no agreement, no vote, and no democratic process at the said meeting with the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. The list being circulated is merely an attendance sheet, not a record of endorsement,” the group clarified.

They further urged the APC’s state leadership and relevant electoral authorities to distance themselves from what they described as a “desperate attempt to mislead the public and manipulate the process.”

“Ojokoro is not for sale. The will of the people must prevail. No individual or group has the right to impose candidates against the wishes of the majority,” the statement concluded.

The aspirants also expressed concern over the party’s alleged preference for indirect primaries, stating that such a method could disenfranchise grassroots members and fuel internal divisions.
