Meranda Appoints Principal Officers, Commits to Collaboration with Sanwo-Olu and Judiciary

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating with other arms of government to achieve a greater Lagos. On Friday, during her first duty as Speaker, Meranda announced the appointment of principal officers to lead the affairs of the 10th Assembly.

Among the key appointments:

  • Temitope Adedeji (Ifako/Ijaiye 1) was named Majority Leader,
  • Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2) became the Deputy Majority Leader,
  • David Setonji was appointed Chief Whip, and
  • Ganiyu Sanni (Kosofe 1) was designated as the Deputy Chief Whip.

The Speaker also announced the members of the Selection Committee, which she will chair. The committee includes the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju Lekki 1); Majority Leader, Temitope Adedeji; Chief Whip, David Setonji; and Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2). Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun will serve as the committee’s secretary.

In her address, Meranda expressed gratitude to her colleagues for the confidence placed in her leadership. She emphasized her commitment to fostering transparency, good governance, and a collaborative relationship with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the judiciary.

Her Key Statements:

  • “We are elected to give voice to the fears, aspirations, and concerns of Lagosians. Our administration will work harmoniously with other arms of government to deliver the dividends of democracy.”
  • “Transparency, accountability, and inclusivity will be the cornerstones of our leadership.”
  • “We will prioritize a brighter future for Lagos, ensuring justice, equality, and opportunities for all residents.”

The Speaker also addressed the House’s legislative priorities, focusing on strengthening legislative independence, promoting good governance, and engaging Lagos residents in decision-making processes.

Condolence to Badagry Residents
During the plenary, the House, led by Chief Whip David Setonji, expressed condolences to the people of Badagry on the passing of Pa Sunny Ajose, a prominent member of the Governor’s Advisory Committee (GAC). The Speaker described him as “a rare gem,” commending his contributions to politics and governance in Lagos State. She directed the Acting Clerk to send a condolence letter to his family and the Badagry community.

The House adjourned its plenary session to January 21, 2025, at noon.
