The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made alarming discoveries during its ongoing enforcement operation at the Idumota open drug market in Lagos.

During the raid, officials seized expired condoms, counterfeit GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) medicines, unregistered narcotics, and vaccines stored in unsanitary conditions—some shockingly found in toilets. The agency disclosed this in a statement posted on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

A particularly concerning find was expired condoms donated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which had been repackaged and sold under the brand name “Kiss Condom.” The operation, conducted on Tuesday, also led to the confiscation of banned drugs such as Analgin, improperly stored Oxytocin for maternal health, and vaccines requiring cold-chain storage but left in unsafe conditions.

Published

on

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the eagerly awaited 280-bed multi-specialist general hospital in Ojo Local Government Area will be operational by December 2025.

During a working visit to the construction site on Tuesday, the governor expressed optimism about the facility’s readiness and its potential to transform healthcare delivery in the region.

State-of-the-Art Healthcare Infrastructure

Spanning over six hectares, the Ojo General Hospital will feature world-class facilities, including:

  • Comprehensive outpatient services
  • Modern diagnostic tools
  • An accident and emergency unit
  • A central laboratory
  • 64 residential flats for medical personnel

The hospital will also house a large restaurant for staff and visitors, ensuring convenience alongside top-tier healthcare services.

According to Sanwo-Olu, this end-to-end healthcare project represents a milestone in Lagos‘ medical infrastructure, bridging critical service gaps in underserved areas like Alimosho, Badagry, and Snake Island.

A First-of-Its-Kind Facility in Lagos West

The Ojo General Hospital will be the largest multi-specialist hospital in the Lagos West senatorial district, offering specialties such as surgery, neurology, and general medicine. It will also serve as a vital link between the Alimosho General Hospital, Badagry General Hospital, and other surrounding communities.

“The hospital will be a fully integrated complex where people can live, work, and receive the best medical care,” Sanwo-Olu said. He thanked local leaders, including the Oniba, for their support and called on stakeholders to back the state government’s efforts to complete the project on time.

Improving Healthcare Access in Lagos State

Once completed, the Ojo General Hospital will mark the first hospital built by the Lagos State Government in decades. It will join the existing network of 28 state-owned secondary healthcare facilities in Lagos, including General Hospitals, Maternal and Child Care Centres, and Accident and Emergency Centres.

Strategically located near key institutions like the Lagos State University campus and the Ojo military cantonment, the hospital is expected to provide quality healthcare access for residents of Ojo, neighboring communities, and lagoon areas such as Tin Can Island and Snake Island.

With construction beginning in 2021 under Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the project underscores Lagos State’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and supporting medical professionals with state-of-the-art resources and accommodations.
