Obasa Reinstated as Lagos Speaker, Meranda Steps Back as Deputy
Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was officially sworn in as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday afternoon, following the resignation of the House’s previous presiding officers.
During the plenary session, former Deputy Speaker Hon. Fatai Bola was the first to announce his resignation at approximately 3:15 PM. Shortly after, former Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda also tendered her resignation.
In response, the clerk of the House called for nominations to fill the vacant positions. Meranda was nominated to return to her former role as Deputy Speaker, while Obasa was nominated and reinstated as Speaker.
LEADERSHIP reports that the Lagos State House of Assembly had been embroiled in a leadership crisis for weeks following Obasa’s impeachment in January.
Following his reinstatement, Obasa addressed House members briefly before adjourning the plenary, stating that it was “not a speech-making day.”
