The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, has refuted claims that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu played any role in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Akosile dismissed the rumors, emphasizing that the impeachment was entirely a legislative decision.

“There is absolutely no truth to the claims. The governor had no involvement whatsoever. It was purely a matter handled by the legislature,” Akosile stated. He added, “The governor is focused on addressing critical issues affecting the over 20 million residents of Lagos State. The legislators made their decision independently, and the governor, like everyone else, learned about it through the media.”

Obasa, a sixth-term legislator and third-term Speaker, was impeached on Monday during an emergency plenary session. Out of 40 lawmakers, 32 voted in favor of his removal due to allegations of gross misconduct.

Following the impeachment, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa I) was elected as the new Speaker, with Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju-Lekki I) stepping in as the new Deputy Speaker.

The plenary also saw the indefinite suspension of the Assembly Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, alongside the dissolution of all principal positions and standing committees.
