Showmax’s Latest Series Takes on Lagos Life, Digital Fame, and Family Drama
Showmax has released the trailer for its highly anticipated Nigerian Original limited series, Under the Influence, set to premiere on January 24 with new episodes dropping every Friday.
In Under the Influence, we follow Dami (Iremide Adeoye), a recent university graduate who moves to Lagos to stay with his older brother Ayo (Bobby Ekpe). Struggling to adjust to his new life and dealing with Ayo’s high expectations, Dami vents his frustrations in a social media rant. To his surprise, the post goes viral, thrusting him into the spotlight and earning him a massive online following.
As Dami’s social media fame grows, he becomes torn between the allure of digital stardom and the complexities of his family relationships, leading to life-changing decisions. The series delves into the digital age’s impact on young Nigerians, exploring their struggles, aspirations, and relationships in a rapidly evolving world.
Directed and written by Wande Thomas, founder and creative director of UrbanGidi (known for Lara of Lagos, Napped, and The Smart Money Woman 2), Under the Influence also features an impressive team of writers, including Isoken Ogiemwonyi (The Smart Money Woman), Nengi Diri, Mannie Oiseomaye, and Nicole Chikwe.
The cast includes breakout stars Eva Ibiam, Dante Okere, Isioma Oke-Nwosu, and Funmbi Oguntoye, adding fresh talent to the Nigerian entertainment scene. Wande Thomas, reflecting on the series, said, “Under the Influence captures the essence of being young and digitally connected in today’s world. It’s about balancing the rush of viral success with staying grounded and true to yourself while navigating relationships with family and friends.”
