The Lagos State Government has urged labour unions in state-owned broadcasting stations to reconsider their planned industrial action scheduled for Monday, January 13, 2025. In a statement released on Saturday, Afolabi Ayantayo, the State Commissioner for Establishments and Training, called on the unions to explore peaceful dialogue rather than proceed with the strike.

The statement outlined that the unions, comprising the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), had issued a strike notice to press their demand for members to be migrated to the mainstream civil service.

A meeting between the Lagos State Government representatives, led by Commissioner Ayantayo, and the union leadership took place on January 8, 2025, where it was agreed that the unions’ grievances would be presented to the Lagos State Executive Council for consideration.

For clarity, the Lagos State Government emphasized that entry into the state’s civil service follows established policies and procedures. In light of this, the unions have been urged to reconsider their decision to initiate industrial action and seek an amicable resolution to the dispute.
